Performances & Workshops

Lilongwe Dance Program students participate in numerous performance opportunities and workshops throughout the year.

Demonstration Classes are held during select classes throughout the year and give families and friends the opportunity to observe students as they take a typical dance or movement class.

Recitals take place annually. Students learn short dances, demonstrating their dance technique, and perform for family and friends. Our first recital was held in December 2018.

Performances and Workshops are offered periodically throughout the year. In May 2019 we put on our inaugural production in celebration of International Dance Day. We also invite professional dancers to conduct workshops and performances with our students, teaching them original choreography, and exposing them to new dance techniques. In 2019, with support from the Merce Cunningham Trust as part of the worldwide Merce Cunningham Centennial celebration, international guest artists performed works by Cunningham, Lucinda Childs, and Anna Sokolow in a program together with the Lilongwe Dance Program teen students. The guest artists and teen students also held a collaborative performance with Forus Dance Crew at Dzaleka Refugee Camp. 2019 also marked our inaugural production of The Nutcracker, which was featured on Good Morning Malawi.
